Archer: EVERY Season Ranked Worst To Best
9. Season Eight: Dreamland
Season Eight of Archer was the show's first journey inside the titular character's mind. As Sterling lies in a coma following the events of Season Seven, audiences are transported into his dreams.
In this first of three themed instalments, Archer is a private detective in the year 1947, out to solve the murder of his partner, Woodhouse, bringing him face-to-face with drug dealers, human trafficking and a gang war.
There's a lot to love with the premise: Mallory is a crime boss; Pam is a male detective; and Cheryl wants Archer to fake her death with the use of a body double. It's some of the bleakest stuff the show has ever done, and in many ways it hits all the right notes, capturing the film noir theme beautifully whilst also ensuring it is in-keeping with the tone of the show.
Mixing the dark tones with the show's brand of humour often pays off very well, and the finale is a fantastic spoof of the noir genre as a whole. However, there are some things lacking. The season is short for starters, and Ray Gillette gets unfairly relegated to the sidelines, but the main thing missing is Sterling himself.
In this world, Archer comes across as a much more subdued and measured of the classic Archer we know and love, and this leaves Dreamland feeling just a little bit empty in comparison to what came before it.
