Arrested Development Season 5: 18 WTF Moments
13. George Sr.'s Discomforting Sleaze
It was immensely unfortunate timing for the show's fifth season that the sexual harassment allegations against Jeffrey Tambor emerged shortly after the season had been shot, putting Mitchell Hurwitz in something of an awkward position.
Though one suspects George Sr.'s role was reduced as much as possible in editing to avoid courting controversy, he's still present throughout, and the majority of his screen time sees him doing things that have unfortunate real-life parallels.
Aside from some discomforting gags about George Sr. in drag ("George Sr. soon realized his impression of a woman wasn’t going to win him any awards, so he took off in his trailer to Mexico to forget his shameful mistakes"), the early portion of the season sees him and Gob (Will Arnett) as horndogs in Mexico, even wearing shirts that read, "We're horny."
Though George Sr. is a fundamentally sleazy character and depicting him as anything less would feel like a betrayal, would it have killed them to tone down the sex gags a little in editing? Regardless of whether or not Hurwitz is standing by Tambor, these moments are thoroughly distracting.
