Arrow Season 7: 4 Ups & 2 Downs From 'Emerald Archer'

2. More To William Than Meets The Eye

One of the episode's high-points saw the return of Oliver's son, William Clayton, who was welcomed back by his father and Felicity during an incredibly awkward moment (with the documentary crew present to film the whole thing). Actor Jack Moore hadn't been since the beginning of the season when Felicity sent William off to boarding school for his own protection and, for some reason, didn't bring him home when Oliver returned.

William apparently didn't take too kindly to being left out of the loop as he threw a tantrum over Felicity's virus' invasion on his tablet. However, he would then drop a major bombshell when he revealed that he had been expelled from school. Despite that, it's clear that there is more going on here than we know about.

Though much of his role in the episode proved to be incredibly problematic (more on that later), it's clear that the character is going through quite a lot and, if it's handled correctly, it could prove to be one of the show's most important storylines. As William is often shoved into the background, we don't get to see that much of what's going on in his head, but this episode has suggested that this may change going forward.

In a few short scenes, Moore gave one of his finest performances yet, with one particular moment being admittedly quite moving, so let's just hope that he's given enough screen time in the coming episodes to allow us to truly empathise with William - because this is definitely a start.
