Batman: The Animated Series: 10 Most Disturbing Episodes

8. Two-Face, Pt. 1

BTAS handled Harvey Dent's fall from grace (no fiancée-related pun intended) extremely well, with Dent appearing in multiple episodes pre-disfigurement, establishing the district attorney as a champion of justice and a friend to Bruce Wayne. This made his tragic fall in this episode so much more impactful than if he had only debuted in an origin story episode.

The entire episode is dark, as we explore Harvey's repressed bad side, Big Bad Harv and we watch Harvey struggle under the pressure of running for re-election, while being blackmailed by Rupert Thorne. It's hard to watch as the stout defender of law and order fights against his dark side, becoming increasingly unhinged before gradually giving in.

Of course, the most tragic and disturbing moment comes with the big reveal of Dent's disfigurement at the end of the episode. Everything about this scene is perfect in just how horrific it is.

After waking up to find his face covered in bandages, Dent demands a mirror, giving us glimpses of his new scars. We then hear Harvey let out a bloodcurdling scream, filled with rage and anguish, before barging out into the hallway, running into his fiancée Grace. Then, with lightning striking in the background, Harvey turns his head to fully reveal his newly deformed features. He has been broken both mentally and physically and the duality that has long plagued his mind is now visible on his body. It's a powerfully disturbing image that sticks with the viewer long after the credits roll.
