Batman: The Animated Series: 10 Worst Episodes

For most of its existence, the creators of the show dictated that there should be no episodes dealing with the realm of sorcery, wizards, magic, etc. Even though these things were certainly not unknown in the DC universe, it was felt that B:TAS was about a street-level hero, and Batman was not yet in the world-saving mode he would eventually come to fill in the Justice League series'.

Yet, by the time The New Batman Adventures came around, writing freedom had opened up, and so we ended up with an episode revolving around Jason Blood, the demon Etrigan, and Klarion the Witch Boy.

Tonally, it was a very different style of episode, thrusting Bruce and Tim into a battle over a magical branding iron that gives control of Etrigan's powers. The story would have us believe that Bruce and Jason Blood not only knew each other, but were on good working terms, despite there never having been any aspect of this kind of arcane magic in any previous episodes.

While not a bad episode of animation, it is a bad episode of B:TAS, as it asks the viewers to suddenly accept that Batman and Robin, despite spending the previous four years prowling the buildings, alleys, and docks of Gotham while fighting both regular and supervillains, now existed in a world of wizardry, demons, and shapeshifting cats.
