Battle Creek: 10 Things We Already Know About Vince Gilligan's Next Masterpiece
9. That Guy From SVU And Lex Luthor's Henchman Are The Stars
They're not the biggest names in the film and television world, but Dean Winters as Detective Russ Agnew and Kal Penn as another, Detective Fontanelle, are certainly nothing to sniff at. The FBI Agent sent in to assist them, Milton Chamberlain, hasn't been cast yet, but even without another mid-level star the caliber of acting already looks to be set pretty high. Winters has plenty of experience playing emergency services professionals from time on shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Rescue Me and X-Files spin-off Millennium, and has proved his prestige TV chops on seminal dramas Oz and Homicide: Life on the Street. Penn, as you likely well know, has had something of a more eclectic career, having most famously starred in the goofy Harold and Kumar movie series among other roles in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns and a recurring role in House, not forgetting his time spent working for Obama's White House. His connections with both Singer and Shore obviously gave Penn an edge in getting the role, but I think it's well-deserved regardless as I've always seen him as a performer of more depth than many give him credit for. I'm excited to see who else joins Battle Creek's growing population (The White Queen's Janet McTeer and Justified's Damon Herriman have also been cast) as the series currently looks to be filled with substance rather than style. That said, Breaking Bad had both in spades so I should probably just keep my mouth shut and my fingers crossed.
