Better Call Saul: Ranking Every Main Character From Worst To Best
5. Chuck McGill
One of the most complex characters on the show, Chuck McGill was Jimmy's older brother and a highly respected lawyer who believed himself to have electromagnetic hypersensitivity. EHS was a disease that gave Chuck searing pain whenever he was near electrical devices. He also deeply disapproved of Jimmy's efforts to become a lawyer, and attempted to halt him from doing so at whatever cost.
Chuck loved his brother, but he judged him heavily. He respected the law too much to allow Jimmy to practice as a lawyer, no matter how well intentioned or talented his younger sibling appeared to be. This led to Chuck becoming a petty and nefarious antagonist for the first three seasons, and he managed to prove an effective villain due to Jimmy's undying love and admiration for his older brother.
The revelation that Chuck's EHS isn't a real condition but a mental illness is sufficiently well handled and saddening, as Chuck goes from being overly malicious to just the actions of a very sick man. His burning resentment and destructive attitude eventually pushes everyone away from him - to the point where he is completely alone and suicidal.
Despite his diabolical nature, Chuck's suicide is never treated like a triumph by the show. He was always the hero of his own story, and he was deeply unwell to the point where he took his own life rather than make amends with his brother. A tragic yet layered character.
