While viewers already know the path a lot of the characters of Better Call Saul are taking, less clear is the destination of figures exclusive to the prequel setting. Kim and Howard, ally and obstacle respectively to Jimmy McGill, are notably absent from Breaking Bad, so all we can do is speculate as to where they’re ultimately headed. Retirement? Return to their home planet? Death?

While Howard’s hypothetical demise would produce few teary eyes, Kim has emerged as one of the beating hearts of the show, and dear to Jimmy in matters personal and professional. The second season concluded with Howard fuming at Chuck’s apparent failure with Mesa Verde and retirement from the firm, while Jimmy and Kim formed solo, neighbouring firms, with their arrangements hinging on the condition that Jimmy stay on the straight and narrow.

Further legal troubles on Jimmy’s part could jeopardise their relationship, romantic and professional, and that’s exactly what Chuck threatens to bring to the fore in the episodes ahead. With Howard surely looking to repair the damage to his firm, and his frequent status as opponent and obstacle to Jimmy, might circumstances drive Kim back to a collaboration with Jimmy’s hated rival?
