The Big Bang Theory: 5 Storylines To Make It Good Again

5. Raj Starts Dating Regularly

It was a nice moment when the conversation between Penny and Raj revealed that he's overcome his inability to speak to women sober, but when the next series began it became apparent that they weren't going to do anything with that change. If anything, it seemed more like a practical decision, with the growing female cast, so they didn't have to keep giving Kunal Nayyar a prop beer bottle to hold in every scene on the off-chance the writers had given him a line. Raj remains the only single main character on the show, so really he's the only one you could do anything interesting or funny with when it comes to the thing that gave the show its unique appeal in the first place. If he's managed to overcome his shyness, then wouldn't the natural thing for a man in his...let's say early-thirties...to do be go on dates? We've had countless episodes where he tries to rush things with a woman he's attracted to, and it gets less funny each time. Moreover, for the character, he must have twigged by now that a slower approach to dating is required. Raj could have episodes revolving around dates that go awry, sometimes through his own doing and other times not. It would be an opportunity to test drive a few new characters, most would likely end up as one-shot appearances but some may reappear later on depending on the outcome of the episode they were in and how viewers react to them. It would give the writers a lot of new scenarios to play around with and could potentially result with the introduction of a long-term love interest for Raj, with whom the progression of their relationship seemed natural.
