BoJack Horseman: 10 Best Supporting Characters

The undeniable thorn to BoJack’s very delicate rose, Beatrice Horseman is the co-creator of the titular BoJack and despite being his mother, she certainly isn’t the definition of a loving parent. As a matter of fact she’s made a career out of pointing the finger at BoJack, blaming him solely for being the reason for her bitter, vindictive treatment of her son. Which is a perplexing paradox that boggles the mind of anyone watching.

What we don’t see at first glance though is that Beatrice is arguably the most tragic character in the entire franchise when she’s revealed to be more of a sympathetically victimised villain, rather than an archetypical one.

In the episodes “Times Arrow” and “The Old Sugarman Place” we explore Beatrice’s childhood, adolescence and early adulthood. You’re not likely to be delighted by what you see in either of these segments. It becomes nothing short of heartbreaking, as we see a wide-eyed foal harrowingly spiralling further and further out of control.

Her brother was killed at war, her mother was lobotomised on her father’s orders - who also forced her to grow up at a ridiculously tender age - before she ultimately meets Butterscotch. A man who she took a chance on at her own debutant showing, in a fated meeting that is almost reminiscent of someone signing their soul over to the devil in disguise.

The saddest part of this unwanted, yet extensive laundry list of detrimental occurrences comes in her final moments. BoJack momentarily puts aside their past anguish and sweetly indulges her delusions of eating ice cream in a tear-jerking scene as her dementia-ridden mind takes her back to before all the pain started, one last time.
