BoJack Horseman: 10 Greatest Diane Episodes
6. Thoughts & Prayers (S4E5)
When 'Ms. Taken' kept getting put on hold because of multiple shootings across America, it sparked a debate not only about gun control, but about the role gender played in such things. Diane found that she felt safe while carrying a gun on the streets, but the men of country didn’t like it.
One politician was outraged that men could no longer ‘compliment’ random women on the streets for fear that they may be armed, but Diane rallied. Why should women only be allowed to feel safe as long as the men around them wanted them to? This issue grew to be so much bigger than gun control, it became about sexism, empowerment, and women taking control of their own lives.
This was something akin to how she stood up to fight Hank Hippopopalous in season two, but this was an ever greater battle. This wasn’t against one dirtbag, this was against the entire system. She eventually lost, in a way. The men of America were so unhappy with women carrying guns and feeling safe that they actually outlawed firearms of any kind. They hated women even more than they loved guns, and though it was a somewhat depressing reality check of an ending, at least Diane stood up for something real.
This was what made her character great, not held back by trying to make other people happy or playing along with whatever ridiculous misadventure Mr. Peanutbutter had gotten himself into this time.
