BoJack Horseman: 10 Greatest Todd Episodes
8. Planned Obsolescence (S5E3)
It would have been so easy to create Todd as a character where his asexuality was the only thing that defined him. BoJack Horseman however, built Todd to be a strong character on his own, where his sexuality was just one facet of who he was, rather than his entire personality.
This helped make any stories that did focus on him being an ‘Ace’ so much more compelling. This was certainly the case when he was taken to meet Yolanda’s family. Despite being asexual herself, she came from a very sexual family, where her father was an erotic novelist, her mother was an adult film star, and her sister was an incredibly sexually driven teenager.
Needless to say, Todd getting caught up in such a situation allowed him to be at his wackiest and funniest. He was being chased by both Yolanda’s mom and sister, while being pressured by her dad to have sex that night. Only Todd could get caught up in a storyline like this and make it work.
However, despite all the silliness of the episode, it did actually get pretty deep at the end. Todd felt inadequate after Yolanda lied to her family about him, and he decided that just because they were both asexual didn’t mean they had anything in common. This was a tough, but big day for Todd.
