Breaking Bad: 10 Best Musical Moments

3. Walt Gets The Bus Alone - The Be Good Tanyas, 'Waiting Around To Die'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4rk7fiNi3U It's strange how affecting a banjo can sound, but when 'Waiting Around To Die' plays in the show, when Walt is catching a bus at night from the hospital to check on his money at home, it's a surprisingly melancholy scene. The title is appropriate, given the stage of Walt's cancer at that point; the melody is transparent and the rhythm guitars are tranquil. It's a lonely song, and a lonely scene: we see that Walt's solitude doesn't just stop at him lying in a hospital bed at night, but that he's truly detached from his family by leading a double life away from them. It's such a sad sequence, as Bryan Cranston silently boards the bus. It's much more effective to use a bittersweet piece of music, rather than racking up tension with a "Will he get caught doing this?" track. Because this is a point in the show when the loneliness feels so much more prominent.
