Breaking Bad: 12 Best Cult Heroes

7. Hector 'Tio' Salamanca

Hector was originally introduced as the elderly, apparently harmless relative of Tuco, a man confined to a wheelchair without the ability to speak. With a bell as is only means of communication, his true role in the wider storyline was gradually revealed as the series progressed. A senior figure in the Mexican drug cartel, a major antagonist of both the DEA and Gus Fring's organisation, his story is told through a variety of flashbacks. Hector's killing of Max, Gus' business partner (and rumoured lover), set the pair eternally against one another, a rivalry used to Walt's advantage. Kept alive and tormented by Gus, who repeatedly encourages the old man to look him in the eye, Hector assists Walt by allowing him to strap a bomb to his wheelchair - taking Fring with him. Mark Margolis' performance added sinister edge to an already often-creepy show, and his character's growing influence was an example of masterful long-term storytelling.
