21. Walt Watches Jane Die
As Seen In: Season 2 Episode 12: "Phoenix" Over the course of the second season, Jesse fell in love with Jane, his landlord's daughter. Jane was a recovering heroin addict, and by the end of the season she and Jesse planned to run away together. Walt owed Jesse money, and promised to pay him his share only if he got sober. Jane blackmailed Walt, and eventually he and Jesse decided to go their separate ways. In one last effort to help Jesse, Walt returns to the house to discover that the two have taken heroin again and are asleep. He attempts to wake Jesse, and in doing so accidentally rolls Jane over on her back. She quickly begins choking on her own vomit, and Walt does absolutely nothing to stop it. He witnesses her suffocate, then leaves. Jesse wakes up the next day and blames himself for her death, which begins his spiral into a depression. Not only is the moment shocking and another example of how far Walt will go to get what he wants, it's a moment that has unbelievably dire consequences that affect the lives of hundreds of people.
