Breaking Bad: 9 Poor Story Choices

8. Walter Could Have Got Out Of The Meth Business And Didn't

Even if you do accept Walter€™s transformation, he is given the perfect opportunity to get out of the meth cooking business and he doesn€™t take it. The final episode of season four sees Walt murdering Gustavo Fring. The collapse of Fring€™s drug empire would have given Walt the perfect way out. Nobody comes after him (after Mike€™s prison pals are murdered, that is) and forces him to cook again €“ he chooses to do so entirely of free will. His greed gets the better of him. Surely a better way forward would have been for him to team up with someone to kill Mike€™s comrades and then retire until the cancer finally took him? This way he would have been able to spend the time he had left with his family and the money he had already earned. Alas, no. Walter willingly chooses to go back into the meth cooking business. And for what? No real reason is given. The carnage enacted by his choice is titanic, resulting in the death of several dozen people and possibly himself. It also sees his brother-in-law Hank finally piece together that he is Heisenberg and the financial ruin of his family. In a list of worst decisions ever, this has to be the icing on the cake. Unfortunately it isn't his only one though.
