Throughout the course of Breaking Bad Walter became a surrogate father to Jesse due to Jesses parent issues. He began the show in a position of authority - that of a teacher, and at one time Jesses teacher - so it is entirely possible that he would adopt this role when his relationship with the much-younger Jesse blossomed. But unfortunately this relationship was frayed from the offset. This did make for some sensational episodes, but at times it did grow extremely weary - particularly in the third season. Walter and Jesse fell out in every other episode and often spent many scenes plotting to off the other one. Ultimately Walter needed Jesse, and vice versa. Regrettably neither character realised this. The viewers did though, which made their numerous arguments hard to stomach. There is only so many times you can sit through two characters hating on one another before the scenes grow tiresome. Many scenes simply rehashed what had come before. Even in the face of unanimous animosity from their foes Fring and Salamanca, Walter and Jesse failed to find common ground. Had the writers cut out their numerous fights you probably would have lost a third of the episodes however, so maybe it isn't a bad thing that they retained them after all
