Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Every Season 7 Episode Ranked Worst To Best

3. Ep. 7: Ding Dong

Brooklyn Nine-Nine
NBC

Captain Holt is famous for his deadpan stoicism, but Madeline Wuntch was one of the few people who could push his buttons. Their rivalry was a long-running part of the show, so it was almost sad when the news of the conniving commissioner's death was announced in this episode.

Seeing Holt's (admittedly inappropriate) ecstatic reaction to the news is hilarious and given his trademarked brand of emotionlessness, it's always great to see him break loose.

Things reach new heights though when Holt discovers that Wuntch requested that he speak at her funeral, hoping that he'll ruin his career with an unflattering eulogy. From here the episode goes through several twists and turns as the two bitter enemies play out one final game of chess, with the results being both hilarious and ingenious.

However, despite all of the clever insults and posthumous one-upmanship, the funeral actually manages to end on a surprisingly sweet and sentimental moment from Holt as he reflects upon what their rivalry had really meant to him.

Of course, this isn't just an episode about death, but also one about birth, since it's here that Jake and Amy discover that they're finally going to have a baby. It's as if the episode pulls a bait and switch - luring the audience in with the comical death of a much-hated antagonist, only to make a touching revelation of an oncoming birth. It's a brilliant and unexpected move that serves as the cherry on top of an already brilliant episode.
