Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Every Season 7 Episode Ranked Worst To Best

2. Ep. 9: Dillman

Brooklyn Nine-Nine
NBC

Brooklyn Nine Nine largely owes its success to the strength its core cast. Every once in a while though, a guest star would almost threaten to eclipse the regular squad, and J.K. Simmons is a perfect example. He's a comedic powerhouse as Lt. Frank Dillman, dominating every scene that he's in.

The episode itself is a "classic who has done this" (because 'Whodunnit' is a "grammatical abomination"), with a glitter bomb going off in the precinct which not only damages the bullpen, but destroys vital evidence from a murder investigation. With the entire squad under suspicion, Holt calls in his old friend, Dillman, to investigate. From the moment he appears on the scene, he is mesmerising, being every bit as no-nonsense as Holt, with a keen eye for observation that would put Sherlock Holmes to shame.

Jake takes this as an opportunity to prove himself by trying to solve the case first, hoping to secure a position on a new taskforce that Holt is supervising. Things go south for Jake though when Dillman names him as the perpetrator, earning him a suspension. But of course it isn't long before Jake is back and the real culprit is revealed.

This is a brilliant little bottle episode that is owned by Simmons, but the rest of the cast are all in top form too. What's more, there are genuine twists and revelations that keep the audience guessing. Plus, it has some nice character moments between Jake and Boyle, which really feed into Jake's character growth.
