Brooklyn Nine-Nine: The Worst Episode From Every Season

5. Season Three - Karen Peralta

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Jake Peralta
Fox

Introducing Jake's dad in season two was a genius move. His first episode, "Captain Peralta", painted an amusing but heartbreaking picture of the fractured relationship between father and son. Then, they almost ruined it by taking that emotion and turning it into a typical, dull conflict.

In "Karen Peralta", Jake visits his mother with Amy by his side, but finds his father there too, revealing that his parents are back together. There's also a plot where Boyle accidentally shows off a little too much of himself on a bodycam, and Holt/Gina/Hitchcock & Scully take part in an escape room.

There are some great elements here, with the Boyle bodycam narrative having a lot of fun at his expense and giving you some decent laughs. Sadly, the escape room story feels like a tacked-on addition to provide the other characters something to do and does nothing out of the ordinary.

Then, there's the main story. Seeing Jake's dad back in his mother's life could have been enthralling, but the humour doesn't land, and it ruins the ultimatum Jake gave him at the climax of "Captain Peralta".

Overall, the episode is passable but causes one of the most interesting relationships (Jake and his dad) to fizzle out.
