Brooklyn Nine-Nine: The Worst Episode From Every Season
4. Season Four - Captain Latvia
Look, everyone loves Nikolaj, or at least what he brings out of Charles. But that doesn't mean they want a whole episode dedicated to finding him a toy. Sure, it's great to see Boyle using his musk and seduction skills to great success, but that's about all this episode has going for it.
"Captain Latvia" follows as Jake and Boyle search for a Christmas toy for Nikolaj by taking down a Latvian mob. To add more festivity to this, the rest of the squad take part in a singing contest and try to rope a drunk detainee into joining their choir.
There is one main plus point to this episode, and that's the chemistry between Jake and Boyle. Still, fans are hardly starved for that, so it doesn't save this outing from being a forgettable mess.
The choir subplot doesn't land at all, as the singing drunkards' woes with stage fright aren't high stakes and feel incredibly uncreative. This is a Brooklyn Nine-Nine Christmas episode, it needs explosions and fun, but instead, you get firecrackers and mundanity.
Also, the Latvian gang narrative gets boring pretty quickly, as Jake/Boyle's mission simply goes through the motions and never feels important. There's no taking down bad guys or saving civilians; it's just finding a toy.
