Musical episodes are a risky endeavour and even with the best will in the world, they're the kind of creative decision that can see a show jump the shark in the most embarrassing way possible. But of course, this is Buffy the Vampire Slayer after all and their one foray into musical territory is arguably its finest hour.

It's hard to say anything that hasn't been said before about what makes Once More, With Feeling so damn good - the clever songs, witty lyrics, the thematic undercurrent, the list goes on...

Ultimately though, much of the episode's humour comes from how earnest the whole thing is, as there's no sneering condemnation of musicals as a whole, instead there's a genuine appreciation for them that permeates through every facet of its creation.

Scenes which show Giles, Anya and Xander walking past an array of other musical numbers that are just playing out in their own way, or how Anya and Tara come in as backup dancers to help Buffy in the finale are beautifully simple ideas that add a whole lot to the overall product.
