Buffy The Vampire Slayer: 10 Most Hated Episodes

3. Seeing Red

Seeing Red felt like the pinnacle of season six's darkness. The show had reinvented itself into a completely different thing once again since Buffy's resurrection. Audiences had been taken on a journey of grief and depression that explored the horrors of humanity. After all that trauma, this episode comes along.

The scenes in this episode were agonising to watch and hit an audience, already on the emotional edge with the arcs they'd been following for months, harder than ever. It's an episode famous for Spike assaulting Buffy in a harrowing and brutal moment that is still seared into our minds to this day.

However, if that wasn't enough, the end of the episode takes an even more horrific turn when Tara is murdered by complete accident as she's finally making amends with Willow. It was a moment that shocked fans who had been rooting for the couple all season and hoped Willow could eventually win Tara back.

It was even worse that Willow and Tara had been the first openly gay couple in a prime time teen drama on American TV. Fans were rightfully angry that Tara's death fell into the "kill your gays" trope that plagued TV shows and aimed to make all gay stories tragic and unhappy.

Even watching back now, this one is difficult to get through. At least it's because it actually makes us feel emotion, rather than some other episodes which left us feeling... nothing.
