Buffy The Vampire Slayer: 10 Most Underused Characters

3. Ethan Rayne

Sunday Buffy
WB

When Ethan Rayne turned up in town, you just knew that episode was going to be a blast. A worshipper of chaos who was once an old friend of a pre-Watcher Giles, Ethan was responsible for the events of "Halloween" and helped Mr Trick in "Band Candy." In season four, he even turned Giles into a demon.

Ethan was the very definition of slimy, played with devilish charisma and smarminess by the late, great Robin Sachs, and despite his mysterious links to Giles' past barely appeared on the show, disappearing after season four.

Given how little we ended up knowing about Giles' time as "Ripper" and his overall friendship with Ethan, it would have been a great development for the show if he would have stuck around a bit longer.

Not only would this have given more time for his and Giles' mysterious backstories to be fleshed-out, it would have given us more time with Ethan full stop - one of the show's most entertaining, underrated villains.
