9. The Anya Incident
Of all the members of the Scooby Gang, Anya and Spike are the perpetual outsiders. Both have lived lives as demons only to find their powers in some way revoked, and while both can pass for human for the most part, their links to the dark side mean they’ll never truly fit in.
This seems to lead to a healthy friendship for the most part, two sarcastic onlookers with a sideways view on the heroic tendencies of their companions. That is until season six episode “Entropy”, in which a combination of booze, spite, and heartbreak sees them take their relationship to another level, with disastrous consequences.
After Anya’s jilting by Xander and Buffy’s final rejection of Spike (with whom she’s been carrying on a secret, shame-inducing fling), the two find themselves alone and drunk in the Magic Box, and the inevitable happens.
This dalliance causes misery for all involved. Xander finds out and flies into a rage; Spike and Buffy’s fling is revealed. BTVS often preaches the ultimately disastrous nature of revenge - this is a small scale, but no less meaningful, example of that.
