8. Massacred The Kalderash
As a notorious vampire with a century or so of intercontinental mayhem to his name, you can take your pick when it comes to Spike’s worst acts as a vampire. He was a keen torturer, caused chaos in Sunnydale for the majority of season two, and was mentioned in passing to have eaten the population of an orphanage, which is pretty heavy.
Of all the heinous acts alluded to in Buffy and Angel, though, the massacre of the Kalderash people has to rank highly. The Romany tribe that cursed Angel with his soul in the late 19th century play a major offscreen part in the show’s mythology, and a season two episode of his titular show covers their ultimate downfall.
Orchestrated by Darla as an act of revenge, this is a particularly savage scene, with Spike at the centre. The besouled Angel effectively surrenders his crown as the most vicious vampire at this point.
This isn’t a plan of Spike’s devising, but he’s the attack dog set upon his poor victims by a vengeful Drusilla, and it’s a frightening side of Spike we’ve not seen for a while at this point.
