Continuing Spike’s history of problematic romance is exhibit B: the whole Buffy saga. Through seasons five and six we see Spike experience an unwelcome crush, turned obsession, turned destructive fling.

Initially, Spike is pitched as a creepy but pathetic stalker. He lurks outside Buffy’s house. Steals trinkets, and is eventually caught pawing through her clothing. Things get worse when he begins to actively pursue her, offering charmingly to murder his ex-girlfriend to impress Buffy, and ultimately destroying her relationship with Riley.

Then, in season six, Buffy is brought back from the dead, alive but inexorably changed. In this fragile state, she begins a clandestine physical relationship with Spike. Neither party comes out great here, but Spike’s manipulative tendencies (telling Buffy she’s not right in a gaslighting manner) belie his assertion that he loves the slayer.

This reaches a peak which we’ll discuss later, but Spike’s infatuation with Buffy takes him down some seriously sketchy paths. Talking of which...
