The Dark Willow arc ended exactly as it had to - not with a big beat-down but an appeal to Willow's better nature and humanity.
As she prepares to end the world, Xander confronts the powerful witch to remind her that he will always love her - he loves his best friend, who cried over breaking a yellow crayon in kindergarten, and he loves her now. As he refuses to move, she eventually breaks down and the old Willow returns.
The Yellow Crayon scene, as it is known, is a beautiful testament to the strength of Xander and Willow's lifelong friendship, as only Xander's platonic love can bring her back from the brink.
