Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Ranking The Songs In Once More With Feeling
2. Rest In Peace
Spike solo punk-rock performance is exactly what everyone would except from him and more. It's a song full of attitude and flare, and James Marsters' voice is a perfect fit for the piece. He also does an admirable job of maintaining his British accent as the song progresses.
The song itself is a great piece, full of meaningful lyrics and solid guitar licks. Watching Spike try to articulate his complicated feelings for Buffy is both endearing and oddly sweet. He wants her, but doesn't want to be around her because it kills him to know she doesn't feel the same way. It's a simple song in many ways, but James Marsters' brings a level of likeability and confidence to it which propels it to new heights.
It may be just three minutes long, but it manages to summarise an entire budding relationship without sounding too sappy, bleak or over-the-top. Also, Spike's look of dismay and annoyance when he realise he's started singing is comedy gold.
