Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Ranking The Songs In Once More With Feeling
7. I'll Never Tell
This is arguably the funniest song of the episode. Showing Xander and Anya singing about their fears of marriage and commitment, it could quite easily have been another sad or overly romantic song. Instead, we are blessed with a entertaining and rewarding number which references Xander's syphilis curse from Season Four and his attachment to Buffy. Plus, Emma Caulfield's voice is a divine surprise.
As a song it's well written and the tone is fun and playful despite the emotional overtones of what's actually being said. Nicholas Brendan and Emma Caulfield also find that their voices compliment one another well, and this helps elevate their already obvious chemistry to even more enjoyable heights.
It's a song about a couple confronting their issues with one another whilst also managing to convince us that their relationship is fine and none of what they are saying really matters. Of course, their relationship comes to a sudden and heart-breaking end later in the season, so we can't help but feel this whole number is a prophecy put in place by the cruel and ingenious Joss Whedon.
