Casting Star Trek: Voyager Reboot

1. Captain Janeway - Julianne Moore

Voyager Janeway Julianne Moore
Paramount/FOX

Few who have seen Julianne Moore act could doubt that she would easily, and convincingly, step into the role of captain of a Starship. She is capable of both high drama and intense comedy, with all of the range in between to bring something truly special to the part.

When Kate Mulgrew was cast as Kathryn Janeway, she did a phenomenal job with absolutely no notice whatsoever. She replaced Genevieve Bujold, who had left the role after a mere two days. Therefore, she certainly made the role her own, rather than having the writers work with her (initially) to craft the perfect part for her.

Janeway, in the early episodes, was a very ill-defined character - other than a strong leader. She is leading a ship, many thousands of light years from home - she needs to be in charge, but she needs to be vulnerable. One thing that Star Trek: Discovery has done well in season three is to show the trauma that the crew are experiencing, lost in time as they are.

Julianne Moore has many examples of powerful performances. She was a leader in Children of Men, a despairing mother and wife in The Hours and a highly-strung celebrity in Maps to the Stars. She was a fantastic replacement for Jodie Foster, taking over the role of Clarice Starling in Hannibal as well.

She could easily lead the team, though it is very easy to imagine her relaxing around her trusted lieutenants and allowing the audience to see what lies beneath.
