Casting Star Trek: Voyager Reboot

7. Tom Paris - Miles Teller

Voyager Tom Parris Miles Teller
Paramount/20th Century Fox

Miles Teller is one of the best actors of the last ten years of cinema. He seriously impressed with his turn in Whiplash, while also standing out in War Dogs. The critical and commerical flop that was Fantastic Four wasn't down to his performance - he was actually quite good in the part!

Tom Paris has to walk the line between both likable and questionable. He's not quite the bad boy of the ship, but he does need to show rebellious tendencies. To capture the spirit, he needs to have almost failed his way up the ladder. When Janeway recruits him, it is because he is a great pilot - not because of his service record.

Teller has shown the right level of snark in his roles to be able to be a bit of an annoyance, while not truly crossing over into the land of truly unlikable. He has also shown that he can play buddy roles well - something that will be essential when doing his scenes with Harry Kim.

Plus - anyone who saw the determination with which he played those drums in Whiplash will never question whether or not this man could get the ship up and away from a fleet of Borg Cubes!
