Like many of the students and faculty at Greendale, Marshall Kane's background is marred. He was serving a sentence of 25 years in prison but used his time to earn a degree along the way. He served his time and then became a biology teacher. Kane had a firm sense of justice that made him rigid to his class. When Jeff Winger's phone repeatedly went off during the first day of class Kane kicked him out of the class and would not let him back in until he voluntarily gave up his phone. Kane wanted to teach Winger a lesson of how he was imprisoned by the device, which he ultimately learned. After the "murder" of a yam and a subsequent trial that sort of led to the death of Star-Burns, Kane gave Dean Pelton his resignation.
