Community: 10 Best Standalone Episodes

8. Contemporary American Poultry

Community Jeff
NBC

You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become a mafia boss for an underground chicken tender trade.

When the study group notices that Star-Burns is exploiting his position in the cafeteria to gain access to elusive and tasty chicken tenders, the team plans a hostile takeover. Think of this episode like Goodfellas, but with chicken.

Contemporary American Poultry is Community's first major theme episode. Themed episodes would eventually become a staple of the series, with great all-time hits such as Modern Warfare, Basic Lupine Urology, and Basic Intergluteal Numismatics to name a few. This Goodfellas homage however isn't just a funny parody episode, but also is one that works as a character piece.

Both Abed and Jeff take the spotlight, essentially trading roles. Abed, usually the weird outcast of the group, becomes the respected leader, forcing Jeff into his previous place. This trading of places gives us a look into both of their psyche, as seeing how they each react to their new role brings out parts of them we had only gotten glimpses of before.

Just don't watch this one on an empty stomach.
