By season six, it's been a while since the last official paintball episode. Frankie's new rules have made paintball illegal at Greendale, so students instead play a game of paintball off the books and without Frankie's knowledge.
When Abed discovers that the game is being run by someone from City College as an attempt to destroy Greendale, he and the Save Greendale Committee set out to take down the mysterious Silver Ballz from the shadows.
This episode functions as a return to form for Paintball episodes. It features great action, humour, and an intriguing, spy-spoofing mystery.
The episode's highlight is its Captain America: The Winter Soldier parody when the Dean finds himself in an elevator with City College paintballers, reenacting a great action sequence from that film. As a bonus, Winter Soldier is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who worked on Community for many years before moving on to Marvel blockbusters, and features a cameo from Danny Pudi, better known as Abed.
The episode only ranks this low because many of the plot points come from earlier episodes, and, though thematically appropriate, "no winners" always comes across as a cop out ending. However, Modern Espionage shows just how strong Community was right up until the end.
