In the first episode, Troy appears to be one of the more normal members of the study group. A high school football player who blows out his knee and loses his scholarship, Troy appears to be a parody of Troy Bolton types, and nothing more.

However, within a season, Troy embraces his weirdness and becomes one of the least normal members of the study group. Symbolically, the first shot of Troy in Season 2 features him wearing Spider-Man pajamas, showing how he embraces his nerdy side in his friendship with Abed. The weird world of Greendale morphs him more than any other character.

When Troy leaves the show, we feel his absence more than any of the other major departures. The show suffers without "Troy and Abed in the Morning" and his hilarious improvised one liners.

While Childish Gambino's career is impressive, we would have been just as happy with a little more Troy instead.
