Community: The 10 Most Hated Episodes
1. Grifting 101 (Season 6, Episode 9)
Matt Berry is a British comedy legend. From his gloriously dramatic
performance as Douglas Reynholm in The IT Crowd to his starring role as eccentric
actor Steven Toast, there’s truly no punchline that cannot be enhanced by his
genius. And yet even he struggles to do anything with this half-baked attempt
at homaging The Sting, the 1974 Best Picture winner at the Oscars.
For one thing, there’s no real B plot to this episode which means that the story of the study group attempting to grift their teacher, Matt Berry’s role, after he grifts them first has to support all of the narrative weight. It is on this list because it totally fails to do so. The whole thing just drags on for too long, getting more and more outlandish by the minute, and ends up suddenly coming to a shuddering stop at the end.
Another season six episode, another concept that could have been done better in earlier years. And surely there are better films to parody for an episode than a 1930s set caper that nobody remembers?
Come on, Dan. You’re better than this.
