13. John Oliver
John Oliver was a major supporting character in Community’s first season, playing Jeff Winger’s friend Professor Ian Duncan. The whimsical yet pervy British psychology teacher was, like Chang (more on him later) a symbol of how dysfunctional Greendale was.
Due to a family illness and his work on The Daily Show, Oliver’s appearances in the show were reduced as the show went on, with the comedian skipping Seasons 3 & 4 entirely. He eventually came back towards the end, but it’s his activity in the meantime which led him to where he is now.
He was a hugely popular writer and guest host of The Daily Show, which helped him score his own HBO hit, Last Week Tonight. The show aims the spotlight on lesser known injustices in America, and has become a trailblazer, scooping up Emmy after Emmy.
Oliver has been busy with voice over work too, starring in The Simpsons, Dan Harmon’s Show Rick & Morty and alongside another Community alum (Donald Glover) in The Lion King. He might not have had the biggest role in Community, but he’s had one of the best post Greendale careers.
