Constantine: 17 Easter Eggs And References You Need To See

3. Nergal

The name of the demon who messed up the Newcastle incident should've sent a shiver down the spine not only of John Constantine but Hellblazer fans as well. The monster itself might not've appeared in the episode but the mention of his name is enough of an Easter egg for those familiar with the comics, where the character becomes one of the most important parts of the ongoing story, appearing repeatedly throughout the series all the way up through to its cancellation and reboot in the mainstream DC universe. Just as in the TV continuity, Nergal was the demon summoned by young punk John Constantine that was supposed to take down the spirit which had possessed the young Astra, only for him to break his binding and drag everyone back down to Hell with him. He since helped bring John back from the dead by giving him a blood transfusion that leaves his body forever tainted, and would generally turn up to ruin things whenever stuff started to go right for the beleaguered anti-hero.
