We all know that one person who - usually as middle-age is about to set in - starts acting as though wearing $70 cashmere turtlenecks and quoting the opening chapter of Swann's Way suddenly makes them a touchstone of the social elite. And boy, wouldn't it be sweet to pop their balloon of pretension?

Step forth Larry David, tactless thumbtack. When Seinfeld star Jason Alexander, paradoxically rebranded as a 'serious actor' and exuding all the unbearable smugness of the worst kind of craft beer hipster, unleashed his new style manual 'Acting Without Acting', it was clear his peg had risen too high.

"A year of my life, right there," beamed Alexander. "And yet, it's very concise," Larry retorted. "I'll read it with dinner."

Sometimes, Larry's incorrigibility proves encouraging. Writing partner and New York buddy Jerry Seinfeld, similarly perturbed by his colleague's dramatic affectations, was enabled to the cause. After pointing out the inanity of the volume's title, the stand-up - in a sly wink to an earlier conversation noting the trend for a phrase used as a qualifying cop-out - dropped it himself to really stick the boot in: "Having said that, I think this is a terrific title..."
