Daredevil Season 2: 10 Reasons This Is The Definitive Punisher
7. The Trial Of Frank Castle
It was a bit shocking how quickly the show seemed to put an end to the Punisher’s killing spree. By the end of episode 4, he was in cuffs and being hauled off by police. Of course his incarceration wouldn’t last long, but it opened the door for the intriguing plot of the trial of Frank Castle.
The movies have done the disservice of portraying the Punisher in a very cut and dry manner. In their vision, he’s a man who lost his family and deserves to exact retribution on those responsible. However, the comic books have rarely shown things to be so simple. Yes, the Punisher has the same motivations as countless other heroes, but the merciless way he carries out “justice” is meant to make us second guess if he’s justified.
The debate is really at the center of the series and the show wisely depicts the public reaction to the Punisher. Some see him as the one who can really save the city, some put him in the same box as the criminals, some think he’s a necessary evil and many fear him.
It all works towards showing us a hero who is not so black and white while subtly setting up the similar argument at the center of Captain American: Civil War.
