Daredevil Season 2: 10 Things That Must Happen
4. The Devil, Inside And Out
After Bendis and Maleev wrapped up their run, the new creative team of Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark took the ball and ran with it. Bendis left Matt Murdock in jail; locked up in Ryker's Island prison by the FBI, next to many of the costumed criminals he helped put away.
Brubaker (the esteemed comic writer who wrote the Captain America story Winter Soldier) didn't shy away from this plot point, which is admirable, as many writers may have been tempted to want to start their run fresh. Instead, Brubaker leant heavily into the tropes of the prison movie and The Devil, Inside and Out was a blisteringly intense read.
Murdock found himself trying to navigate the waters of the prison, with many of his old foes trying to kill him at every turn. However, due to the need to prove his innocence, Murdock had to play the defenceless blind man while still protecting himself. A delicate balance act that was perfectly played by Brubaker and Lark.
There was also the small matter of Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, who appeared in this story when he got himself arrested and thrown in Ryker's Island in order to protect Murdock. Charlie Cox has already gone on record saying he wants The Punisher in future Daredevil seasons, and this is as perfect a way to introduce him as any.
