7. Surprise! Maggie Is Matt's Mother (Episode 9, "Revelations")

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, it's revealed in the ninth episode that Sister Maggie (Joanne Whalley) is in fact Matt's mother.

A series of flashbacks reveal her meeting Jack Murdock (John Patrick Hayden) as a young nun, falling in love with him, getting pregnant and then suffering from post-partum depression once young Matt was born.

As a result, Matt was taken away from Maggie by Father Lantom (Peter McRobbie) for their own good, though in the present she serves as a physical and spiritual aid to Matt, and he eventually learns the truth.

It's fair to say that not every superhero show needs to get bogged down in contrived familial ties, but this was a neat nod to comic book fans all the same, and sensibly avoided indulging in overt melodrama.
