Daredevil Season 3: 18 WTF Moments
6. The Karen-Centric Episode (Episode 10, "Karen")
The divisive tenth episode of the season is centered almost entirely on Karen and fleshing out her backstory with extensive and surprising flashbacks.
The episode reveals that in her younger days she deferred her college application and became a drug dealer with her boyfriend Todd (Ben Stout) in the hope of keeping the family diner afloat, while suffering with her own substance abuse issues.
Things eventually come to a head with the tragic accident that's been hinted at in previous seasons. Karen's younger brother Kevin (Jack DiFalco) sets fire to Todd's trailer home in the hope of driving him away, but a fight ensues, which leads to an inebriated Karen driving herself and Kevin away, crashing into a guardrail and killing Kevin.
The attending police officer is a friend of the family and arranges for Karen to be ommitted from the report in order to avoid jail time, but her father (a brilliant Lee Tergesen) consequently wants nothing to do with her.
Say what you want about character-centric episodes, but this certainly pulled no punches with its shocking rundown of what made Karen the person she is today.
