Disenchantment: 7 Things Season 2 Must Do
4. Give Luci More To Do
How is a demon played by Eric Andre the dullest part of the show? The character isn’t bad, and he offered some decent laughs - like willingly jumping into Big Jo’s jar - but he’s the worst culprit of the show’s slightly half-baked characterisation.
Bean is mostly rebellious, though this ranges from criminal to petulance depending on necessity to the narrative. Elfo too has his innocence, naivety and desire for adventure rise and fall as necessary. Luci isn’t just about getting the balance right. Luci left fans trying figure out what they were even trying to balance.
At the minute he feels like a Bender imitation, though you sense there’s room to grow. There’s not many other characters in Disenchantment who seem like they have a clear Futurama counterpart, and perhaps that’s the issue. While other characters have been created organically, it feels like Luci is there because he’s needed.
Sent to spy on Bean, he’s obviously linked to the story but his motivations are unclear. If that’s intentional, it comes off as muddled rather than tense. Eric Andre can always be relied on for a laugh, but they need to give him more to work with when Season 2 drops.
