Doctor Who: 10 Best Moments Of Series 8 So Far

3. The Creature Under The Covers - Listen

As previously said, episodes this year have been criticised by some quarters for being too scary, for instance in the 'brain soup' scene from Time Heist. However, that moment pales to nothing compared to a scene from serial chiller Listen when... something sits under a bedsheet? Is that it? Well, trust us, it works... The Doctor's latest mission is to prove the existence of the perfect hider, creatures that could be all around us but we don't know it. This search leads him to an orphanage where little Rupert Pink (Clara's boyfriend, Danny, as a child) is frightened of a figure sitting on his bed, silent and unmoving. Calming the child, the Doctor gets them to turn away as the creature leaves. It may not sound much but this scene is a tour-de-force of Doctor Who terror. The simple premise of the scene could come from any horror film but it is staged exceptionally well - with the lighting and direction deserving special notice - keeping us enraptured until the whole thing comes to a head when the figure removes the bedsheet in the background, revealing a fuzzy image. The episode may later suggest that there is no monster and that it was only a child but we task you to find a child creepy enough to do all this. Unless that child is you, of course, in which case, er, hello there. Please stay away.
