Doctor Who: 10 Great Writers For Future Series

1. Katie Baxendale

Katie Baxendale Notable Work: Sugar Rush Unfortunately, Katie Baxendale is perhaps the least well-known writer on the list. She has written for Eastenders, Fat Friends and The Paradise and is adapting Nick Hornby's terrific novel Slam for Channel 4. But Baxendale's best-know work as a writer is Sugar Rush, of which she is the creator. Adapted from the novel by Julie Burchill, Sugar Rush tells the story of a young lesbian living in Brighton who obsesses over a straight girl- it bagged Baxendale an international emmy and a BAFTA nomination. With a career trajectory very similar to Helen Blakeman, she seems a natural fit for Doctor Who. With Sugar Rush behind her, she stands out as a fantastic writer of Drama that can appeal to all ages. It's been far too long since she's been in the public eye for her work, and now is the time to bring her back into the spotlight. Any show that can get Katie Baxendale to write for it is a luck show indeed, and Doctor Who should be the next. In conclusion, Moffat-bashing is getting boring. He's a great writer, but to be perfectly honest the show has gotten stale. Let's hope he keeps to his promise and strips back Doctor Who for Capaldi's first series. No drawn-out arcs and less timey-wimey complex concepts crammed into 45 minutes. Series 8 and 9 will not be split, and there's every chance that this will be a golden era for Moffat as a writer- but he would help himself and the show by getting in a ton of new writers, and some of them women. Because it's the endless cycle of getting in the same old writers that have made the show predictable. The show's future is safe as the ratings have been increasing and the show is more popular than ever across the globe. Moffat is a smart guy and it seems he's ready to shake things up with Capaldi. But let's get some new writers in amongst the old, please!
