Notable Work: Father Ted, Black Books, The IT Crowd, Count Arthur Strong Many people have suggested Armando Iannucci write for the show, now that Peter Capaldi is The Doctor. And whilst that's a great idea, at the moment it seems both too obvious- he's a great writer and a fan of the show- and highly unlikely- he's extremely busy as the showrunner of HBO's Veep. So another choice of renowned comedy writer and über-nerd is Graham Linehan. Hiring a writer well-versed in comedy can go one of two ways- beautiful (Richard Curtis) or uneven (Simon Nye). But as well as being a seasoned veteran, Linehan also directs most of his own work, so has an advantage over a lot of writers. His comedy is always a treat, mixing subtle pathos with trouser-wettingly funny absurdity. Most of the time when you watch a Graham Linehan script, it feels like a live-action cartoon. Having someone as sophisticated, silly and passionate as Linehan write for Doctor Who is a very good move. He's well-known in a lot of circles, but nowhere near as internationally famous a writer as Abi Morgan or Jane Goldman, so he's a sensible choice. You just know that if he wrote for Capaldi, it would go down as one of the funniest episodes in the show's history. And for all we know, Linehan hides a darker side that he's been waiting to unleash on an opportunity like Doctor Who- that's something definitely worth pushing for.
