Doctor Who: 10 Great Writers For Future Series

4. Helen Blakeman

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVmxjC-jfIA Notable Work: Pleasureland, Dustbin Baby Every name thus far on the list has probably been recognisable. So the next choice is no less prolific, but certainly not as well-known. Helen Blakeman is far more active as a Playwright, but her television work is worth serious merit. Pleasureland tackled taboos as it depicted a 14 year-old girl determined to lose her virginity in order to escape social pressure. Blakeman's last major work, an adaptation of Jacqueline Wilson's novel Dustbin Baby, is a seriously good children's drama. Up next for Blakeman is an adaptation of Jacqueline Wilson's novel Hetty Feather on CBBC. She's certainly shown herself to be the ideal person to do justice to Wilson's text... Blakeman's career draws some parallels with that of previous showrunner Russell T Davies- she's balanced controversial drama with soaps and high-quality work for Children's television. It would be silly to suggest her writing would be similar to Davies, but since both come from a similar sort of background in terms of TV writing. BAFTA-nominated, International Emmy Award-winner... Blakeman has some real pedigree as a writer for both children and adults. And whilst some of the choices on the list are a little unrealistic due to their fame or previous work, Blakeman is the most realistic choice suggested so far, and has the best chance of ending up as a writer for Doctor Who.
