Doctor Who: 10 Huge Moffat Plot Twists That Pose Bigger Questions

3. Amy Loses Her Baby

In an episode of twists, 'A Good Man Goes to War' threw up the same one twice, when it was revealed that Amy's baby was a ganger. The real Melody was far away by now, and Amy had lost her only child. So why wasn't more made of that? We never really saw the effect of that on Amy, which relates back to the point about the Ponds' divorce. Did she really sufficiently recover from losing her daughter to a space religion in time for 'Let's Kill Hitler'? Does this not alter the relationship she has with River? Does "bringing up" Mels make up for the horror of her baby melting in her arms? You could argue that none of that stuff is appropriate for a family show, but it's an important subject that shouldn't have been shied away from in the same way that Richard Curtis tackled Vincent van Gogh's demons head on. Even the new Hunger Games film makes reference to post-traumatic stress: a little detail on how Amy coped could've been a fascinating exploration into when the Doctor lets down his companions, and how he deals with the guilt of that.
